After breast augmentation, it is extremely important to follow the recommendation of the surgeon. For the most part, postoperative bras are used after breast augmentation. The bra is a great way of providing support to the breast after surgery. Essentially, my protocol is to first use a support bra. The support bra essentially is a sports bra commonly used for exercise. The good thing about support bras is that it will not have wires that can cause irritation and discomfort, because the wire can rub against the incision itself.
Typically, patients are recommended to use a sports bra for about a month before switching to a wired bra. Some patients come to the clinic thinking that the breast augmentation surgery is an anti-bra procedure, even though their breasts will become bigger and heavier. This can cause sagging in the long run, even though there are no prospective studies that suggest using a bra is better versus not wearing one. Now some anecdotal studies have shown that if a patient uses a bra, their breasts holds better in the long run. So, my recommendation is for you to use a sports bra the first month, and subsequently you can go back to your wired bra. However, I do not recommend using a bra forever after surgery, because this is going to have negative impact on your breast shape in the long run.
